John Graham Nicholson
John Graham Nicholson Jewell was the first child of George & Mary Jewell born on the 1st of February 1900 and was born at the family home, 9 Bolt Street, Bendigo. Throughout his life John was known as Graham. According to some certificates his name is Graham John however his birth certificate confirms he was born John Graham.
On the 1st of February 1918 Graham enlisted in the Army as a Private. At the time of his enlistment he was living at 238 Danks St Albert Park (his parents home). His occupation was a chairmaker. He was working at Emerson Bros in Sth Melbourne as an apprentice for about 3 years but it seems that he was out of term.
On the 24th of March 1919, Graham was discharged from the Army. According to his discharge papers he served 192 days abroad in the 14th Battalion. Graham did not see active service, he was based in England until after the end of World War One. He listed his occupation as a Rubber-Worker and his residence as being 238 Danks St Albert Park.
On the 2nd of October 1922 Graham married Irene May Pill (daughter of James Pill & Catherine Brown), at the Baptist Church in Portland. According to the marriage certificate Graham was a chairmaker. His address on the certificate was 165 Mills St Albert Park.
Graham & Irene had 2 daughters:
- Eileen May Jewell - born 5th September 1923
- Nancy Patricia Jewell - born 24th September 1924
Graham worked at several jobs to support his young family until he joined the Public Service as a Telephone Technician in the Postmaster Generals Department. He retired in 1965 after many years service. Graham and Irene lived at 50 Reed Street Albert Park for most of their married life, before moving to Mooroolbark for their retirement
On the 31st of July 1973 Graham died at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. He was cremated on the 3rd of August 1973, at Springvale. Graham's wife Irene continued to live a full life, until her death on the 8th of June 1995. Irene was cremated and interred at Springvale.
